Feature Writing vs. News Writing

Did you know that feature articles and news articles are two different things? While each may contain similar elements, they differ in purpose.

• A news article reports the facts of an event.

A news article conveys all pertinent information about a topic concisely. It focuses on who, what, where, when, why, and how. News articles are typically time-sensitive because readers want to get the information immediately. News articles also follow an inverted pyramid structure, with the most important facts listed at the beginning of an article. News articles are also brief, averaging between 100-400 words.

A feature article focuses more on one or two aspects of the story. It might focus more on the who or the why for example. Feature articles don't have to be published as soon as an event has occurred and they tend to be relevant long after they are published because the focus is on human interest instead of straight facts. There is also flexibility in structuring a feature article since key details don't have to be listed first. Feature articles can be much longer, allowing a writer to dive into the topic.

Both formats have different strengths and weaknesses, and which you choose will largely depend on your audience or your employer if you write for a business.
